Department of Defense 8570.1 Directive
In August of 2004, the U.S. Department of Defense established Directive 8570.1, which requires that every full- and part-time
military service member, defense contractor, civilian and foreign employee with privileged access to a DoD system, regardless of job
series or occupational specialty , to obtain a commercial certification credential that has been accredited by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) by January 1, 2010 in order to retain his or her job. Each agency will be required to report their
compliance annually to Congress and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Failure to do so may result in a loss of funding.
DOD Certification Syllabications
According to the directive, all the above mentioned are "Information Assurance" personnel, but there are a number of
different categories, specialties and level of Information Assurance personnel. At the moment there are 2 main categories one for
managers, referred to as Information Assurance Management (IAM) and one for technical staff members, referred to as
Information Assurance Technical (IAT). Specialties are Computer Network Service Defense Providers (CND-SPs) and IA
Systems Architect and Engineers (IASAEs). These categories and specialties are further broken down into levels I, II, or III
depending on functional skill requirements and/or system environment focus.

Getting DOD Compliant

2. Keep your certifications current by knowing how long each certification is valid and what the steps are for recertification.
